THE SET-UP: Today’s Daily Thread was sparked by Trump’s use of the word “demonizing” in his response to the sniper shot seen ‘round the world:
“It’s long past time for all Americans, and the media, to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree day after day, year after year, in the most hateful and despicable way possible.”
Of course, he then singled-out “those on the Radical Left” and he promised to marshal the government’s resources to punish anyone and everyone “who contributed to this atrocity.” That last part was a straight-up threat against “organizations” that fund and support “political violence.”
He said all that without irony or shame, despite countless examples of his unmatched ability to demonize anyone who disagrees with him. For years he’s called his political foes “evil” and “sick.” He calls them and the media “enemies of the state.” He’s accused uncooperative politicians of “hating America.”
But “demonize” stood out for another reason … because I’ve seen the word “demonic” appear more and more in the Christian news and infotainment media. Headlines often use demonic, Jezebel Spirit and spiritual warfare as clickbait … and it’s not unusual to see Democrats, feminists or trans Americans called “demonic.” And they are being literal. Many MAGA Christians literally believe they are engaged in “spiritual warfare”—meaning they are actively battling Satan and his demonic proxies in school libraries and unisex bathrooms and Congressional races.
Predictably, they also believe God is on their side, providing them with “spiritual armor” for the battles they’re fighting to “save” America. It’s grandiose, but think about how important one must feel if they are armored-up to fight in God’s army against actual demons?
Today, we’re hearing politicians and commentators appeal to “our better angels.” But how will boring “better angels” ever compete with the Sci-Fi/Fantasy adventure awaiting those who enlist in God’s army to wage “spiritual warfare” against “demonic” forces?
It’s spooky and cinematic and it puts you on the frontlines of a high-stakes supernatural battle for the soul of mankind. And it also dehumanizes your political foes on a metaphysical level. Your enemy becomes God’s enemy and once duly demonized there’s nothing you can’t do to them on God’s behalf … just ask the Canaanites … or the Pequots. - jp
