About two years ago I noticed a recurring headline tag during my Monday morning collection of stories for the RUNDOWN—the “Weekend Shooting.”
It might’ve emerged out of Chicago, where the local news tallied-up the toll of the previous weekend’s carnage every Sunday night-to-Monday morning. The totals were always eye-popping, but what became even more notable was the way that phrase spread around the country. As the “Weekend Shooting” tag spread to other major cities, I began plugging-in a time-limited/24-hour search for “weekend shooting” and “weekend gun violence” and up popped that telling tag in headlines around the US.
That, in turn, led me to survey the “weekend” tags along with “gun violence” every Monday morning. I collected most of the headlines and the links that appeared over the course of the previous day or two. I say “most” because I couldn’t collect ‘em all and still build a RUNDOWN that included the all other stories on all the other issues that usually crowd the Monday morning newsycle.
But here on Newsvandal’s Substack I can bring you the full measure of America’s weekend ritual of deadly gunplay. I guess I could say something somber or snarky about the weekly bloodlust … sadly, though, the barrage of headlines already speaks volumes. Sadder still, I can produce a new list like this every Monday.
