Yup, that’s gotta be the most overused word of the Trump Era. To wit, this Data Dump brings it all to you … that is, if it appeared within the last 6 days.
And yup, ten years as the world’s most omnipresent human being qualifies this as an era. He’s also breaking precedents on a daily basis. But the weeks since his crime takeover have been particularly precedent-setting. He is radically expanding the scope and power of the presidency. Culture, finance, history and architecture are all subject to his whims. Of course, he’s also upending Posse Comitatus and federalizing municipal power. And he’s openly using his office to enrich himself. Each day it all continues just cements these practices a little bit more. He’s laying the foundation for a supercharged version of the Unitary Executive and for an expansion of his “crime takeover” model to Chicago and LA.
It looks to me like a play for the midterms. Instead of inflation and Medicaid, he can claim to be ending crime as we know it. The troops will be props in a months-long reality show-style political ad. And, not for nothing, he’ll have that power in his pocket heading into 2028, if not longer. In fact, he’ll have Patel’s FBI and Bondi’s DOJ at his disposal. By then, he may have wrested control over the Fed. And he’ll have a media that seems to have finally capitulated. - jp
